VOLUNTEERING
Troop 435 is a Scout led troop but all scout troops require dedicated adults to run the troop. Our expectation is that parents be open to volunteering with the troop in some capacity during your son's tenure with the troop. Here are ways that you can help.
There are 4 different ways to volunteer:
Become a Troop Committee Member:
The committee consists of parent volunteers who can fill various roles to support the administrative needs of the Troop. They are responsible for conducting the business of the Troop, setting policy, and helping the Scoutmaster and Scouts with the activities program.
Interested in Leadership? Try Assistant Scoutmaster:
If you are interested in working directly with the scouts, helping them learn to lead and run their troop, talk to the Scoutmaster about becoming an Assistant Scoutmaster. ASMs support the Scoutmaster in various ways including working with patrol leaders and appointed youth leaders in helping them learn their jobs (but not doing it for them!). ASMs are required to attend positions-specific and outdoor leader training offered by our council - the Golden Empire Council.
Can't make all the meetings? Try being a Merit Badge Counselor:
The Merit Badge Couselor is an important role in the advancment program. Whatever your area of expertise or interest, you can play a big role in stirring a Scouts curiosity about a topic. Time investment varies based on Scout interest and the type of Merit Badge. There are about 135 to choose from (see scouting.org or meritbadge.org for a list). You don't need to be a leading authority in the subject, just be sufficiently knowledgeable. To become a Merit Badge Counselor, complete the application and turn it in to one of the troop leaders or committee and complete Youth Protection Training. Click here to learn more.
Don't what a leadership position? How about Unit Scouter Reserve:
This is a way to help in the troop and on outings. This position is for supportive adults who have no immediate, specific leadership role. However, this position still requires an application, criminal background check, and the completion of YPT.
