MERIT BADGES

You can learn about sports, crafts, science, trades, business, and future careers as you earn merit badges.  There are more than 135 merit badges to choose from.

Merit badges are an important part of rank advancement starting at First Class, but a Scout may begin earning merit badges at any time.

A Scout must earn a total of 21 merit badges to achieve the rank of Eagle.  Out of the 21 merit badges, there are 13  specifically required for the rank of Eagle.  These are trimmed in silver thread.

Steps to starting and earning a Merit Badge:

1) Pick a Subject - Read the requirements of the merit badges that interest you and pick one.  Talk to your Scoutmaster who will give you a few counselors to pick from.

2) Get a signed blue card or approval on Scoutbook from your Scoutmaster to start the MB.

3) Call the Merit Badge Counselor - Get in touch with a counselor and let them know you want to start the badge.  The counselor may want to meet with you to explain what is expected and to start helping you meet the requirements.  If calling to complete a partial, let them know.  During your meeting, you and your counselor may start working on the requirements or in some cases, you may share the work you have already started or completed.

4) Work on requirements - Read the merit badge pamphlet on the subject.  Troop 435 has a large library of merit badge pamphlets for you to check-out and use.  However, make sure the pamphlet is the most up-to-date version, containing the current requirements.

  • You are expected to meet the requirements as they are stated.  If it says "show or demonstrate," that is what you must do.  The same thing holds true for such words as "make," "list," "in the field," and "collect," "identifity," and "label."

4) Requirements completed - when ready, make an appointment with the counselor.  Bring along the things you have made or done to meet the requirements.

5) Get the Badge - When the counselor is satisfied you have met each requirement, they will sign your application (blue card or approve in Scoutbook).  Either give the signed blue card to the troop's Advancment Chair, Mr. Smith, or let him know it's been approved in Scoutbook so your merit badge patch can be presented at the next Court of Honor.

** Remember - Scouts must have another person with them at each meeting with the merit badge counselor.  This person can

be your parent or legal guardian, or another registered adult.

** Note: There is no time limit for starting and completing a merit badge, but all work must be completed by the time a Scout

     turns 18.
